As students develop their visual literacy in the art room we investigate different design challenges. In an effort to build cohesive instruction, at Lyon School we have a design thinking model that we use as a staff for our inquiry based objectives. This model has been adapted from several sources including the Stanford Design School and the Engineering Design Process.

We always start with a question. Some questions are more complex than others. They can range from What do you see for the future? to How can we use line to help us tell a story?
We discover how other artists currently and/or in the past have answered similar questions.
We often tackle the idea generation stage in small groups or as a whole. After students generate multiple ideas, they select which one they think best solves the challenge for them and helps them communicate the message that they want in their art. They make a plan for their art.
They choose the materials that will help them bring their plan to life and create an artwork that answers the original question.
Throughout the process, students look back at their work and reflect on their process. Is this turning out the way I had envisioned? They have several opportunities to change their original plan. At the end, they reflect on their entire process and create an artists statement in their Artsonia portfolio online. For more about their digital portfolios, go to the Artsonia page of this website.
